The Architectural Evolution Beyond Naive RAG#
In standard Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), the request pipeline is linear: user query -> dense vector search -> top-k chunk extraction -> LLM prompt injection. While effective for simple single-document lookups, this naive pattern breaks down rapidly in complex enterprise domains:
// LangGraph Stateful Decision Node Definition
export interface AgentState {
userQuery: string;
rewrittenQuery?: string;
retrievedDocs: DocumentChunk[];
relevanceScore: number;
finalAnswer?: string;
isGrounded: boolean;
}
export async function gradeDocumentRelevance(state: AgentState): Promise<Partial<AgentState>> {
const gradingPrompt = `Evaluate if the context below directly answers: "${state.rewrittenQuery || state.userQuery}"`;
const score = await evaluatorLLM.predict(gradingPrompt, state.retrievedDocs);
return { relevanceScore: score, isGrounded: score >= 0.85 };
}
The Agentic State Machine Architecture#
To overcome these failure modes at Centralogic while engineering Centra Assist, we re-architected our retrieval pipeline using LangGraph state machines. Rather than a static pipeline, the system operates as a directed acyclic graph (DAG) with autonomous self-correction loops:
